Gynecomastia, a condition that afflicts a significant percentage of the male population

Gynecomastia is a medical term that refers to the abnormal growth of glandular tissue or breast in males. Most of the time, male breast enlargement is caused by an imbalance or change in in hormones, particularly estrogen and testosterone. In some cases, growth is induced by drugs, while there are also cases where it can be caused by a medical condition before.

Approximately 40-60% of the male population suffers from gynecomastia at some point in their lives. In particular, the pubertal gynecomastia - abnormal breast growth in boys - is the most common. The condition can be unilateral (affect only one breast) or bilateral (affecting both breasts). Milk production may or may not show, depending on the severity of the condition and growth of the breast.

pubertal hypertrophy, however, also associated with Gynecomastia is characterized by an expansion in the hard disc-shaped male breast tissue that is under the areola. The condition usually subsides and disappears within a year, while breast enlargement in older males is often attributed to weight gain. Instead of developing glandular gynecomastia in adult males is made up of obese adipose tissue or fat deposits. This condition is what we refer to as Pseudoginecomastia (false gynecomastia).

Another cause of gynecomastia in adult males is represented by the side effects of some drugs, which can trigger breast growth. There are also some diseases such as cancer, Klinefelter syndrome, and liver cirrhosis, which can cause a hormonal imbalance in the body and thus give rise to the growth of the male breast.

The social stigma linked to gynecomastia is very intense so afflicted individuals will seek every possible treatment to get rid of. Fortunately, many methods are now available, and promise to effectively cure the condition.

Today, patients can eliminate the gynecomastia without undergoing any surgery. Doctors can prescribe a medication, supplements or hormone therapy depending on the current condition of the patient and the cause of the problem. Therefore, it is very important to consult a doctor before finding effective tools on how to eliminate gynecomastia.
