at the British School in Rome is open for a few days exposure BIOMILANO curated by Stefano Boeri. The exhibition is included in the program of Three Cities in Flux: a calendar year and a half long that involves planning professionals European and world as: Ricky Burdett, Peter Murray, Bob Allies, Stefano Boeri, Henk Ovink, Reinier de Graaf , Francesco Cellini around the theme of urban regeneration.
Boeri's exhibition was exactly what I expected. Visions, drawings, diagrams, halfway between utopia and the stark reality: Plans for a future in which food and arable land scarce and the crisis of the labor market will force us to be-as they say, more austere, definitely a bit 'more self-sufficient, a little' more farmers. Projects for a company that does not exist yet, but already happily grow fruit and vegetables in plastic and axonometric.

seems that you want to finally correct the excesses. And while some planners decided yet what this generation signature should be left on the tabula rasa areas of building activity, other terms and test a new territorial organization, speaking with posters (... Landscape and Landscape Third of Vertical Forest up of our farming villages), use and define new concepts. However, it is a success!

I thought back to them some documents concerning the reclamation of the Agro Romano and Latium . The idea of surrounding the cities (London, Berlin, Rome ...) with a green belt of forests and crops is not hardly new. Green belt in true English style aside, just in time to be born in Italy and the global trade of goods was not for everyone, we thought it well to clean up the countryside around Rome, which was plagued by malaria and uncultivated to produce fresh food and Italian. It was the end of the 800. The power of the nation was very strong, immediately began to build agricultural villages (in the draft that the Boers are 60 farms), farms and infrastructure around Rome.

[The area decichilometrica]

a strong idea of territorial organization is flanked by a social project unprecedented in the history of Italy that continued until the end of the Fascist period. Thousands of families migrated in the Roman countryside contributed to the landscape that is still possible to observe in the countryside have fled the latest wave of speculation.

What intrigued me most was the area decichilometrica, another concentric circle used for planning the Roman-see for example, the Aurelian Walls (3k range), the belt entrenched (7km), the Gra ( 11km) - the area decichilometrica (the first 10km then extended to 15) gave the reclamation project that ambition utopia that only renovations had, extended urban regeneration throughout the Roman suburbs, but mainly it was an unequivocal tool for dealing with expropriation of landlords and investment. Outside the circle were the areas to be reclaimed and those that build the centers of colonization that were designed to provide the city with " a new belt of gardens and orchards to replace the suburbs that was gradually disappearing with the expansion of new building constructions .

All ' Inside this document you will find interesting methods of settlement, the social project, the prospects of farm residences, contracts and strategies to coordinate environmental and human resources.

Rome and Milan, surrounded by gardens and orchards have been fascinated me and I'm glad that certain ideas magically come back in vogue in the course of history.
